HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CYBER CRIMINALS?

The possibilities that the spread of the Internet opens up for us are indisputable. We do everything online – we make payments, run a company, make friends, send private photos. However, the Internet is full of threats, and cyber criminals can steal our data in a few moments.

FIRST OF ALL: ATTENTION

Till now, hackers have used mainly the email to launch attacks, but with the massive use of social networks and smartphones with an internet connection, the possibilities to perform an attack are increasing. Millions of malicious programs are created annually. We advise on how you can protect yourself on the Internet to avoid interception and use of your data by cyber criminals. Above all, however, keep basic security measures:

• Use anti-virus programs and perform regular updates.
• Regularly update all software, including applications (preferably automatic updates).
• Do not use the same password for all sites.
• Make sure you have been redirected to the real institution’s website – if you are unsure, enter the address manually. Cybercriminals often practice creating fake versions of websites that differ from the real ones only by typos.
• Be caferul when providing confidential or financial information over public Wi-Fi networks.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ONLINE SECURITY?

Use multi-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication is an additional layer of security in the process of logging into online accounts, a tool offered by most major Internet service providers. The method of operation is simple – when a user logs in to their personal online service account, the tool asks not only by entering a password, but also a second way to authenticate account ownership, which varies depending on the service. Most often it is a code sent to a mobile phone in the form of an SMS.

Install a VPN. The virtual private network encrypts the connection and changes the location of your mobile device. It’s the best security when using a public Wi-Fi network in a cafe or airport, when hacking your data is the easiest for hackers. Thanks to a change of my IP your internet traffic will be routed through an encrypted tunnel and no one – not even your internet provider – will be able to track your online activity.
Also, a home connection does not completely protect against cyber criminals. The first step is to change the default settings activated after configuring the Wi-Fi network, which can often be found simply by using the Google search. You can also take additional actions, such as changing the network ID password, adding WPA2 encryption, changing the router name. It is worth checking exactly what equipment is connected to your home Wi-Fi network and make sure that there are no unwanted devices on the network.

Among other ways to increase your level of security, it’s a good idea to use a password manager. The generators are very easy to use and automatically create a unique and secure password for each page you visit. This means that you will not have to remember and enter passwords yourself, or constantly invent new ones. The downside is, of course, that in effect you entrust all your passwords to one service.

Online activity is never completely secure. Actually, there are invisible dangers at every step, and hackers are using new ways to capture and use your private data. However, maintaining proper precautions and – above all – a little common sense will minimize the risk.
